Helen Terry uses dye, mark making and hand stitch to assemble abstract textile works. She has a degree in Ancient and Medieval History reflecting a fascination with the way we interpret fragments and traces of the past to uncover hidden stories and meaning.
Generally beginning with white cloth, she investigates different ways of colouring and marking the surface to create layers of marks and texture. The resulting cloth is torn, layered and stitched to explore the repetition and juxtaposition of marks to convey a sense of a story or a journey.
Found marks - whether natural or man-made are a major source of inspiration. There is a particular interest in the kind of mark that suggests something about the history of the object or surface and the wear and tear inflicted by the environment.
